A list of my various readings weighted by general length/content and the placed in [roughly] chronological order (at least within type).
The weighted reading tally was an evolution of my “read books list” on my old blog, running through July 2015 [due to some un-remembered reason, the end of 2013 and all of 2014 was lost]. This is the attempt to bring it back. It uses low-level math to try and capture a more informative map of my annual reading habit.
Brief Description of Weights (2026 version)
The idea is normalize “a book” as being roughly equivalent to 300-500 pages effectively covered with text of moderate difficulty. Then, perhaps ironically considering this page, with some degree of simplification to prevent advanced calculus being required. The general rules are:
- GENERAL NOTES
- The following weights assume normal to moderately complex text.
- Very complex text, more mentally-active content, etc might increase the item count by double or triple.
- “Vibes” are a factor. Lord of the Rings would be three Books, here, though you could divide it into 6 or 1 based on certain readings.
- Audiobooks naturally count as full. I will mark them as [Audio].
- Gamebook type content counts as full (e.g., Fighting Fantasy books are 1x Book).
- Audio-plays, visual novel games, motion comics and other multimedia extensions most likely do not count. Here or there I might feel like something crosses back into “reading” but we’ll see. However, videogame versions that include relatively-full text — such as the Fabled Lands adaptation — might count if I can figure out how to tally it. Depends.
- For personal notes, will mark books I have re-read as [Re-Read].
- Novels and Non-Fiction Volumes: weight of 1+ Book per item.
- 300-500 pages [per book] (in reality, 200-800 is a more inclusive range to avoid a lot of 1.5 Book type situations).
- Expected reading time from 6hr – 15hr.
- Due to my preference for fiction, non-fiction might increase the complexity curve depending on the topic and be reduced to 400+ pages per book.
- Books over 800 pages might still count as 1x depending on factors.
- Light Novels and Shorter Novels: weight of 1/2+ Book per item.
- Around 150-300pp [per light/short novel].
- Reading time of 2hr to 4hr.
- Some will be weighted double due to reasons, but still be in this category.
- THIS CATEGORY IS SOMETHING OF A NEW TEST.
- Novellas: weight of 1/3+ Book per item.
- 80-120 pages [per novella].
- Expected reading time of 1hr to 2hr.
- When in doubt, I’ll just round up to 1 Shorter Novel.
- Graphic Novel: weight of 1/6+ Book per item.
- (generally) 150-200 pages [per graphic novel].
- Expected reading time variable, but around 1hr.
- Highly variable in complexity due to all sorts of factors.
- THIS MIGHT BE RESET TO 1/8+ BOOK PER ITEM IF A LOT OF MODERN, WESTERN VOLUMES ARE READ (they tend to be very quick reads, nowadays).
- Short Reads: 1/12+ Book per item.
- Includes short stories, long/significant articles, and other reading elements that have significant weight but are designed to be read in a single, easy setting.
- Expected time from 10min to 30min or so.
- Anthologies or similar collections will be treated as whole books.
- Complex short stories and/or those of some length (say 60+ pages) might be rounded up novella.
- Comics and Shortest Reads: weight of 1/36+ Book per item.
- Around 30 pages [per comic/etc].
- Probably around 5min to 10min per item.
