In the previous entry, I talked a bit about how I’ve been a fan of various Japanese pop and rock acts for years but it was relatively recently that I got this into it [largely by the way of the more indie/alt side of things].

Before I continue, let’s show some love to Necry Talkie (and their new song, “Extra Things”):

The whole Smoke & Blue EP is worth listening to if you like that one.

In this song, you get this lyric:

苦手なことならさ、いくらでも見つかるのにまるで平気なフリばかり上手くてそれは、それは

Which (most likely quite roughly) translates to:

“I can find countless things I’m bad at, but I’m so good at pretending to be okay with them. That’s just…”

And it’s that crossroads between the energy of their music and the introspection of their lyrics that got me into Necry Talkie and brings me back time and time again to listen to them.

My first song by them was “You Should Head North” and at the time I was just a little bit amazed they had English subtitles right in the interface. “They” being either the band or Youtube or whoever provided them. I don’t think I was used to that experience.

And that was a game changer, because I am decently guilty of what David Grohl said: “Most white people dance to the lyrics” (around the 33 second mark). I appreciate there is a whole gaggle of folks who speak not a lick of Japanese who jam out to Top 50 J-Pop countdowns on the reg by sheer vibes¹, but it also is an aspect that held me back a little.

There were essentially two bands — you will be both shocked and awed to see that I’m about to list The Pillows and Do As Infinity, again — whose music I listened to enough that I went out of my way to find lyrics for…and sometimes made super awful attempts at translations. For a lot of bands and songs, there was a lot of just vibes and beats. I was doing the song equivalent of reading a book entirely by looking at the cover.

Sure, I did not need to know precise lyrics to know The Pillows’ “Thank You, My Twilight” to appreciate it but I also liked knowing what was being sung, you know? Like, listen to it and then go back and listen to it while reading the lyrics. Even if you can listen to Japanese without aid, just having the rhythm of the syllables pulled out helps. The vibe is not deeply buried by any stretch, but it’s nice to have that deeper connection.

Also, holy shit, finding that video to link is how I found out that the drummer, Sato, died earlier this year. Christ I’m about to openly weep for a moment, ok? And then get back to writing. Just keep in mind that the rest of this post will be while I’m playing The Pillows’ last couple of albums in the background and wiping tears.

Ok, I’ve recovered a bit. I already mentioned frederic’s “oddloop” and it was interesting finding that and not really needing to know the meaning in the way it wasn’t necessary to know a precise translation of Mika’s “Elle Me Dit”…but it helped. Those songs are bops. Fun just for the audiovisuals. Even then…

This is why Necry Talkie was an important band for me to discover because their videos like “Tangled” and “The Girl Who Hates Music” and, a personal favorite, “Kininatteiku” kept me coming back for the audiovisual but also the lyrical experience. The ironic contrasts to facing, overcoming, and being overcome by various issues just fit a spot in my heart where music needed to fit.

It was the lyrics of “You Should Head North” that made me fall in love with the band. I’ve seen picked up a regular rotation of bands across a half dozen languages and its fun to have a connection across that “barrier”.²

The Algorithm has its upsides.

Anyhow, I think I was going somewhere with this but I’ll wrap up with saying “Thank you, Necry Talkie” for being one of those signposts that got me into music and helped inspire to keep reading deeper into what lyrics are on the page. This white boy is dancing to lyrics, again.

Back to jamming out to Rebroadcast and Nook in the Brain while I cry some more tears.

It helps that lyrics tend to be “I’m horny for you,” “I’m horny for you but I’m going to call it love,” “Oh crap, you dumped me…,” or “I’ve been thinking about my own failures and that’s ok” so it doesn’t take a huge spoon to dig the sandbox wide open. ↩︎

It is later than I intended to be up while writing this, so it will be briefer, but first let’s have today’s Music Video Pick (#12!), Ado’s “Monstruo”:

It’s a very bombastic song. I like it. There’s not really anything by Ado I haven’t liked. I own something like four concert blu-rays by her. Have merch. You get the idea.

There was another band who released a song yesterday that was a potential for the slot but they will be tomorrow because I wanted both of them to get spotlight near one another.

Technically in the wrong order, but we’ll get to that.

It is probably pretty obvious that, so far, all the songs in the Music Video Pick series have been Japanese. It’s not precisely intentional. Just a side effect of me being really into a particular flavor of Indie/Alt-Rock at the moment and that flavor being represented, essentially, by Japanese artists and by folks featured on the I Saw the TV Glow soundtrack. Also hey, nothing and generally I would put a few others but you get the idea without spoiling the joke.

The odd thing is that despite being a pretty massive tokusatsu nerd for years, I’ve not really done a whole lot of listening to Japanese music outside of a few bursts. The Pillows were absolutely influential in my overall musical tastes. On par with Rush and Smashing Pumpkins, really. Moreso than Nirvana. Maybe behind the Pixies but we are splitting hairs.

I was pretty obsessed with Do As Infinity through the first three albums. I had a Nana Kitade greatest hit album. Utada Hikaru. Sheena Ringo. Jammed out to those two pretty hard. Ringo was a primary inspiration for a character in my solo RPG playthroughs. She stuck with me. I still listen to all these bands, but we are starting to hit the edge of fandom pretty fast. I had a single EP of Asian Kung Fu generation. An album by Rip Slyme and maybe two by Orange Range. I had an album by Beat Crusaders and not the one with “Hit in the USA” on it. I went to a Dir En Grey concert. I actually ordered direct-from-Japan multiple deeply experimental albums. Kenji Siratori and such. I used to be into a lot stranger variety of music, let’s just say.

Stuff that featured on some Kamen Rider openings got picked up here or there. Especially in the Kamen Rider W/OOO-eras and after. Not consistently, though.

Back in my heavier Spotify days, the only Japanese music on my playlists that wasn’t from something toku related was frederic’s “Oddloop” and Superfly’s “Kakusei.” And The Pillows. Whole albums by them. There was various bits from Kenji Ito and other game composers, as well. I added a Scandal video to my Youtube music video playlist somewhere in this era and liked a few others.

Then a couple of years after “Oddloop” there was some stuff like Mondo Grosso. Kana Boon. I got my first taste of Majiko (through someone making video which used it, kind of a fake music video type thing). Leo Ieri, though I never knew her by name, she just showed up and at some point I subscribed. Ueda Marie is also in this era for me though like Ieri it took me this most recent resurgence to really start recognizing her.

Time and time again I listened to some music from Japan, generally stuff a bit more in the Pop-Rock range, but nothing quite like The Pillows. Either in style or in just the intensity of how much it actually stuck with me.

Then there was Necry Talkie, which fired off an entire wave of Youtube flinging Japanese Pop and Rock music at me which I think made it all the way into the early-ish days of Hitsujibungaku (pre-“More Than Words” or it might have stuck a LOT harder, that track absolutely slaps).

Necry Talkie is tomorrow, though. Today we are going to fast forward up to just a couple of years ago, when I got into Ado. Because I first I absolutely did not get into Ado. She was another artist that showed up from time to time in playlists and recommendations.

I came across a song or two by her. There was her collab with Imagine Dragons. With that I saw how passionate her fans were (and still are) and based on their passion, picked up a couple of albums by her. But didn’t quite listen to them, yet. I played them in the background or put them in a massive collection of “play these, sometime.”

Then, bit by bit, I started paying attention. “Lucky Bruto” and “Readymade” got stuck in my head. “Ibara” and “The Show”. I started watching clips of her playing live.

I think it was around the time I sat down and just listened to “Elf” that whatever slight roadblock had kept me from appreciating her completely cleared. This was the build up to Ado’s Best Adobum. By the time we moved to Belgium (sadly, it was something like 2-weeks after she played here in Brussels) that album was my primary music disk. The Pillows level of being replayed.

I listened to something off that album essentially once a day. Every day (or, as we say in Flanders: elke dag). At some point I started picking up physical albums and getting concert disks and all that. Dandadan and Creepy Nuts would have also been around this time and hooo boy, that was another deep dive for me. I had already heard, and enjoyed, MindaRyn’s “Black Star” (linked because of those glasses, hot dang) but I her second full album was out also around this time.

And the way Youtube works, once I started consistently playing a couple/three artists singing in the Japanese language then it decides I am a complete and total weeb and 90% of the music recommends need to be from Japan.

It’s ok. Shortly after that I got back into Necry Talkie. I got re-introduced to Majiko — with apologies to the “Adomination” types, Majiko is my preferred solo female singer…like, most preferred across all languages I’d say, though Ado, Pommelian Thijs, and Paloma Morphy are all close behind — and even some old “music flames” like Sheena Ringo. I’ve never really stopped being into Do As Infinity. I possibly should buy higher quality versions because I’m pretty sure I’ve been using the same 128bit MP3s for years.

More importantly, in my eyes, I started getting the kind of Japanese music that would not have been shown to me a few years back. Stuff like Crazy Blues and tiny yawn. Stuff like Monthly Shonen Irony. Muque I think would have gotten there. And thank all the gods for Brandy Senki and 171 getting in front of my eyes. Yorushika was another one that I’m sure I would have gotten along the way, and likely did before I clocked who they were, but am also realllly glad to have heard them.

What I am saying is that pretty much every artist on this list is because of that weird frederic to Necry Talkie to Ado pipe line and the way those three clusters of music (around 3-4 years apart) brought in other artist that seeded my liked videos, Spotify playlists, and music video playlists. Spotify has been gone for a year, now, and I mostly buy stuff and then just play it off my own devices rather than rely on streaming services, but I like being exposed to the new.

Also, I am getting a lot of acts that only have a few hundred views (regularly under 2k) and that is a bit interesting but I am starting to fill up on all the new music I can even mentally conceive. Fun, though.

In a perfect storm of new videos for me, let’s look at Goomiey’s “Spotlight” [MVP #11]

Well, Space Pilgrims, sometimes it happens but for a person like me who listen to a lot of indie, alt, rock, and pop stuff from Japan, today was just a full on storm of new music by artists whose music I have really enjoyed in the past.

We’ll get to “Spotlight” but first let’s consider Leo Ieiri’s “Echoes” — probably my favorite song by her since “Ame Kaze Sora Niji” — komsume’s “OK”, and Takeshi Yamada’s “At the Edge of the Voyage”. All three are strong contenders. komsume possibly hurts the most to skip, so take that as you will.

Let’s take a look at the song that I went with for today:

In my review of For as a whole, I mentioned that I felt it was an afternoon album perfect for bouncing off bricks and bookcases. I think “Spotlight” and its video help to demonstrate what I mean.

Haku.’s “Isshin” [MVP #10]

The main-line MVP series hits 10 posts AND this is the third (or fourth?) premiere in the past week AND we have two acts in a row that include a period in their official name. Fun!

If you are aware of Haku., chances are you have heard their cover of “Mono no Aware” [*giggle*] but in general give the band a chance. They have some tricks which shift here or there but they retain their central style even as they explore some interesting mixes and progressions.

For instance, try out “Patapata Cat” (especially true for fans of One Cut of the Dead) and “Looking through the universe with my subtle double eyelids“.

Seems like they have a new album (combining bits from a couple of EPs? It is hard to tell without the full tracklist) coming out soon.

tuki.’s “Third Planet” [MVP #9]

In some ways, “Third Planet” is probably not the first song by tuki. to which I would recommend you listen, but I do like it…

The reason I’d almost say hold off is simply because there have been a number of songs by the young songwriter which have dealt with longing and self-discovery — all the way back to her breakout hit, “Bansaka” — and this one feels to me like something of an answer to those. Things can be a bit flawed and unknown, but we work together and try and make something.

The video’s end does combine well with the voice to blend some plaintive elements in the mix. A metaphor about crashing into someone who is significant to you for a certain period of time and then saying goodbye. Not all bad. Not all good.

Something else.

The video is a bit like a femme, glitched out Project Hail Mary for those into that sort of thing.

mM7th’s “Growth” [MVP #8]

Last night was just chilling with Kaz when this video popped up for the second or third time in my recommendeds. The interesting name of the band — mM7th = Major Minor 7s, and written in a way that makes me think “myth”— is partially what did it. And I’m glad I did…

Though the jazzy driftiness of the whole thing is really good, just the part early on where she sings (note: as translated by them for the video), “Tell me, Pascal, about the badness in me, now that I’ve learned to want things…,” is where I started to fall in love with this song. Not just the lyrical shot at Pascal, but also the way she pops out the word “Pascal” very nearly like a muted curse.

You also have the moment at the end where she sings and the on-screen lyrics suddenly stop only to return in the silence after the song:

Swayed in the soft breeze under the shade
Touched it with bare hands out of curiosity
I call this flower “Happiness”

The fact that you can see the soap still on the street from her “washing hands” moment earlier in the video brings home that earlier line about the wickedness of wanting things.

mM7th is just hitting overall and currently has < 2k subscribers and only 5 songs on their channel. If you like to jump in early on bands, here’s a chance.

For other recommends, I’d say 逆様 which they released to international single as “Antithese”. Somewhat similar in theme, but a bit jazzier. It makes a nice companion piece.

Crazy Blues’ “YoungGirlsNeverApart” [MVP #7]

I can keep this absolutely short and sweet:

Thank God for bands like Crazy Blues keeping precisely this genre of music alive…

The visual and audio shift right before the minute mark is so divine it almost makes me teary eyed.

Might not trust that pie, though. Or that cat. Would absolute be glad to hang out on a different but nearby mountain and jam to the tunes, though.

Crazy Blues doesn’t have the deepest back catalog yet so now is the time to jump all in, but if you had to pick another song then maybe “Lot” as their biggest hit (just watch out for some flashing imagery [if sensitive, look away around 4m mark]).

Muque’s “Still Not Enough” [MVP #6]

I think sometime (soon) I’m just going to have a “week of Muque,” “week of Brandy Senki,” “week of Yorushika,” and so forth and get it out of my system.

But for today we turn back to another “just premiered” song for the Music Video Pick of the day. Muque’s “Still Not Enough” (「たりない」)…

It’s a catchy song with a fairly simple video but it grows on you on replay. Just watching folks vibe out is nice. It is always interesting to have a song this upbeat with a video so laid back have a lot of lyrics about it’s “just not enough” but realizing its not enough is the first step to hope, eh?

My recommendation is to pick a dancer or two and just watch how they get through the whole thing. Lots of variety. Take a few trips. Worth it.

My favorite is see-through-Green-shirt man:

No “See also…” for this one because I’m going probably just post most of them. Lots of good songs.

MVP Bonus #1: Trying to remember Shirotsume Biboroku’s “Accelerator Pedal” (with a lot of assumptions and time)

While prepping for this [eventually-not-Daily] Music Video Picks series, I have been doing some mental sorting for music videos from the past year or so that I know I have liked. Trying to turn it into actual sorting into playlists and notes. That kind of thing.

Then, something occurred that took some time to fix… I had a “pretty clear” notion of a video that I watched in 2025, but I realized I had it tagged incorrectly in my brain. Let me explain…

My mental notes went something like this:

Japanese (absolutely sure), heard on Youtube (absolutely sure), and not a song I had downloaded at the time (pretty sure)
Female singer (almost entirely sure but I left in the exception that it could have been a male-fronted band with a female-presenting actor on screen since that seems common enough)
Alt Rock // Shoegaze (really sure)
Person is in a green field (fairly sure) and there might be some shots of an ocean or body of water (maybe sure). There is 100% a green/gold motif in the color scheme
There was a scene with a picnic table and this is possibly at the end as a celebration (pretty sure)
The guys in the video (bandmates?) are doing various tasks while she is a more a wanderer (it was getting flimsy at this point)
There is a scene where the singer (?) rescues her male bandmates (?) and they drive around in a Japanese-style mini-van (I was sure of the car scene, other aspects maybe less so)
A scene with a person on a ladder? (I don’t know, man)
I heard the song around the time I had found out about wowdow and Chili Beans and was listening to those bands (like, maybe…it was getting pretty vague)
This was tied into the mental stress of the international move and was part of that era where we constantly boxing and packing up stuff and Youtube was a primary media experience. May or June 2025?
I kind of remembered the video and channel having a lower subscriber and view count, but so it goes because luck and The Algorithm are both terrible role-models (actually pretty sure about this)

Then a day or two ago I went “Wait, what song was that?” For reasons I do not know, at least not clearly, I realized my brain had come to associate the song with either Crazy Blues or tiny yawn. Except I have music from both of them and listen to them on fairly frequent rotation [and Crazy Blues should show up on MVP in a day or two]. Despite being of a similar music fit, there were no close videos in either of their catalogs.

I had a mental cataloging error and I wanted to fix it (while showing a band some love).

As I begin a shallow dive, I got discouraged super fast. Because both Goat Life’s “Narcissus” and Yureruwayurei’s “Echoes of a Fading Girl” showed up fairly fast in my notes/lists and had the kind of visual imagery that was really close but also completely different. You also had Kurayamisaka’s “Sekisei Inko” (I think I only listened to this once, around that time, but it was nice). Again, not really close, but certain elements showed up that made me start to wonder if I had mashed together several visual tropes and came up with a song that did not exist [at least not anywhere close to my scant memories].

I looked through my liked videos (which Youtube caps at 5k¹) and a large music video playlist I’ve kept for a few years but have let lapse for several long stretches. Neither had anything else that was a closer match.

I sorted the Entire Youtube Watch History options to just “music” and spent around half an hour doing a deep dive through all of 2025’s for myself. Nothing showed up better than the three, above.

There was a non-zero chance that even if I had not Frankenstein’d a video out disparate parts, I might be looking at a piece of removed media. Some things get removed and sometimes Youtube tells you and sometimes it does not.

This morning I sat down and gave myself an hour and a half to go page by page through my Youtube history. All of it. 1000s of videos. Random shorts. AI slop pushed into Up Next. Hours just letting Youtube pick song after song. Multiple copies of the same song or video rewatched a few times. It took a while. Nearly half an hour just to get all the way back to August 2025 with my browser steadily increasing in its glitching out and getting overloaded.

This was all assuming I was correct in my timing. And other such variables.

Then I went to more or less every music video in the list and clicked on them (unless I knew them pretty well). Just in case I was recalling a few scenes out of context.

I figured if nothing else I would go all the way back to January 2025 and hoped my browser wouldn’t melt.

From April 30, 2025, I found this cluster of things:

And viola! Presenting to you as very special bonus episode of Music Video Picks: Shirotsume Biboroku’s “Accelerator Petal”:

My brain had recalled almost the exact placement on the shelf but not name of the band or song. Reference librarian brain is weird.

Now that I had the song, though, let’s take a look at how close my other details were:

Color motif was pretty spot on (there was more blue than I remembered, but I can see my brain would have shunted that to a more filler color)
Many of the storyboard details were actually correct as was the general band composition and genre but there were odd gaps and mistakes
The vehicle is in a significant amount of the video not just a quick shot like I thought
The picnic table shows up for a scene and then kind of makes a much shorter cameo than I recalled. Glad I wasn’t skipping to the end of the videos or it wouldn’t have worked at all…
There is no ladder at all. One of the band members is doing some work next to a tree and that’s all I got
Body of water is pretty dang significant

Song is good. I like it a lot. I wish I had gone back and listened to it more when it was fresh but it was a rough time to sort stuff and no doubt a lot of things got lost in the wash.

Unfortunately, looks like I found them at pretty much the exact wrong time. Shirotsume Biboroku had shrunk over 2025 and 2026 to just three members and then just two and then just one. They have now called it quits.

There was a good bye concert very recently. Like, 25 July 2026. Just last week. I wish them all super well.

The most recent song, “Atmosphere” is also good for a listen.

It would be nice to get more from them but I’m glad I found them again.

If Hana Ohara ever rebuilds the band, I hope Youtube lets me know before a full year has passed. Otherwise, I might have to go digging again.

Nanajuuhachi’s “Time Lapse” [MVP #5]

Had something else in mind for today but new stuff should always trump the backlog and since this video is around 5 hours old at the time I post it: it wins.

It makes an interesting contrast to “Roller Coaster” with its muted color schemes, introspection, and generally more downbeat self-analysis. Lyrics deal with feeling like you are out of sync with the life other people plan for you and being left behind as other people go off on their — presumably more successful, but maybe only in her eyes — journey.

You could 100% say that the person chiding someone for being too serious in “Roller Coaster” is talking to the person of this song. They are same person. That is likely on purpose.

Little details like the slow increasing of color as the song goes and the use of the bridge and waterway to demonstrate the liminal space are nice. I especially like the touch that at the end the view swings around to show another bridge.

It’s not about the destination, here. It’s about navigating the times in between.

Also, fair play for the “time lapse” pun [a lapse in time, being lapped, all sorts of word chews, there].
